Week 6 Key Takeaways vs Green Bay

That Damn Carlton Davis is For Real

Carlton Davis, a/k/a C-Murda is killin’ this season.

Every game so far, he’s given validity to Bruce Arians’ proclamation of his being a Top 10 CB last season. He’s been playing in a different role from last year as he’s been matched up more man-to-man rather than playing the left side of the field as he did in 2019.

He’s attributed his uptick in performance to a deeper level of film studying.

And in Week 6, that was on full display from the jump.

On the very first pass of the game, Davis shows that he’s been paying close attention to what the Green Bay offense has been doing throughout the season. He sees a screen pass coming immediately. He crashes between two WRs to break up the pass.

Throughout the game, he, again, made play after play. He assisted on the Mike Edwards INT that almost went back for a Pick-6 on the drive following Jamel Dean’s game-changing INT that went to the house.

He also played a huge role in 2 of the coverage sacks Rodgers ended up taking. He essentially took away 2 targets at once.

Davis was flying all over the field like a linebacker at times.

But, the biggest thing that stood out to me was when the BUCS didn’t make the play. On 3rd and 18, with the BUCS up 31-10, the defense gave up the 3rd down conversion. Davis immediately reprimanded his teammates letting them know that the score was no reason to lose focus and give up the big play.

That’s serious business.

That’s why I repeatedly dismissed the notion of bringing in “veteran leadership” via free agency. The young guys like Davis ARE the type of veterans you want.

Young. Talented. Highly motivated to make a name for themselves and prove they belong.

Davis is that dude.

Earlier in the season, I had a chance to find out exactly where he got it from when I had a Q&A with Carlton Davis II. You can check that out here.

Enough of McCoy Already!!!!

I don’t know what Arians and/or Leftwich is thinking.

I don’t.

I don’t understand the logic behind it. And maybe I shouldn’t. I’m just a fan after all.

But, my seeing LeSean McCoy over the last weeks has led me to believe he’s either got a video of Leftwich smoking an illegal substance wearing a gas mask with confederate stickers and an “I Love Nickelback” t-shirt or Bruce Arians is funding his son’s fantasy football league by making insider prop bets on LeSean McCoy.

There’s absolutely no reason McCoy should be getting carries over Vaughn at this stage. Not one.

And, no….it’s nothing personal. Like most football fans, I liked watching McCoy do his thing for years. However, at this stage he’s best saved for emergency situations. Like, if Jones, Fournette and/or Vaughn are out and he’s the 2nd backup then.

McCoy’s contributions against the Packers went like this:

  • Run for 1 yard gain.

  • Catch for 6 yard gain

  • Run for 3 yard loss

  • Run for 1 yard gain

  • Run for 2 yard gain

All of those touches could have/should have gone to the Ke’Shawn Vaughn who’s likely to, at least, replicate that kind of production.

You done messed up a-aron

Hey, I’m a BUCS fan. No doubt about it. Ask Courtney, my season ticket rep.

But, dammit…I LOVE comedy as much as anything. And I cracked the hell up when this happened LIVE. Rodgers is one of my favourite QBs to watch as well as one the best personalities in the NFL. And his nonchalant look just sold this one for me.

I can’t lie. I laughed.

And then I immediately got pissed.

Kinda like when you hear a joke or a funny story and then later realized that it was, at least, something you did or it was about you.

Well, Rodgers got to celebrate just one more time before all that fun ended at the hands of Jamel Dean on Sunday. After that, it was rollercoaster from hell.

“Do you think it was the 3 pumps that got ya in deep sh*t with the football gods…..??”
— Pat McAfee to Aaron Rodgers on why the game got so out of hand

Rodgers ended up getting reacquainted with his ol’ buddy from the NFC North rivalry pitting Detroit against Chicago for 5 seasons.

He and Suh have had a rough past, to say the least. Suh, while playing in Detroit injured one of his teammates. He also, infamously, stepped on Rodgers’ calf after knocking him down on a play. Furthering the narrative of Suh being a “dirty player”.

Well, that narrative lived on for at least a few plays on Sunday. Though there was no penalty assessed for roughing the passer, Suh did get a flag that was offset by a Packers penalty.

Moments later, Such laid another big hit on Rodgers. This time for a legal sack. And that drew a curious reaction from the QB.

Later in the game, Rodgers, apparently, tried to strike up a conversation for after the game. That invitation to talk out their long-standing feud after the game got lost in translation as Suh may have taken it as a challenge to fight.

The whole situation is hilarious.

You can see/hear from Aaaron Rodgers himself talking about the loss to OUR BUCS on his appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.

That damn Touch

In the 3rd Quarter, Brady threw one of those passes that make you hold your breath just a little.

He hit Gronkowski with perfect pass with the perfect touch as he headed towards the sideline. Anything less than perfect and this is a tipped pass with THREE Packers defenders surrounding the ball.

I hate the thought of throwing into triple double or triple coverage. And, by the broadcast view, that’s exactly what it looked like. And I would’ve lost it if it didn’t end perfectly.

However, you can see from the All 22 that Brady got the underneath CB with the timing of the release. Again, anything less than perfect timing and it’s probably going the other way. And maybe a better defender gets t o that ball.

But nah.

Perfection ensued.

Where has this been?

For those uninitiated, Donovan Smith, the designated whipping boy of a select group of BUCS followers, was a helluva run blocker at Penn State. He used to lead block and pull much like he does on this play.

But, that’s not something that’s been utilized much.

Here, he just runs through a LB and takes on him on a 9 yard ride.

More pulling, please……

The Defense Runs Everything

Basically, at this point, it’s absolutely undeniable that the Defense drives this Team.

Point blank. Period.

Never mind all the talk about the potential of the Offense and all the fantasy football fanatic favourites and having the “G.O.A.T” at QB. It’s the Defense that runs things. Week in and week out, it’s the most consistent unit. It’s the most impressive unit. And Week 6 was no different.

It all started with the Pick-6 from Jamel Dean. That gave the BUCS their first score of the game after the offense went for 39 yards and 2 punts on the first two drives.

And the next scoring drive was off another INT from Mike Edwards that put the offense on the 2 yard line. Easy score.

Of the Packers’ 12 offensive drives, the Defense held them to 3 plays or fewer on 7 of them. That’s big.

And the Offense fed off of that.

Including the 2 yard drive after the INT, the Offense scored on 4 consecutive drives with 4 TDs and 1 FG.

What’s still to be seen is if the Offense can hold up it’s end of the complementary football bargain. If/when the defense happens to struggle, can the Offense survive a shootout? That’s TBD.

However, there should be no question about what is driving this Team right now.
